Interview:
Jesse L. Martin Joins Series in a Flash
If things get boring on the set of “The Flash,” the cast could always break into a few musical numbers. Grant Gustin, who plays the scarlet speedster on the new CW Network series, has a long background in musical theater. But, his credits pale to the time co-star Jesse L. Martin has spent on stage — including starring in the original Broadway production of “Rent.”
Martin moves into the expanding universe of TV shows inspired by super hero comics with “The Flash.” He understands the rabid following comics have because he saw a similar passion by the fans of “Rent.”
“It did sort of feel like you were a super hero,” Martin tells me. “It was more of a singing, dancing lower East Side kind of super hero who had no powers other than emotional and use of voice.”
“Rent” has been one of the biggest roles in Martin’s career but as soon as his run ended, he felt a little bit like Superman jumping into a kryptonite bath. Martin explains that no matter how successful an actor’s previous role, there’s always that feeling that there’s a good chance you will never work again.
That wasn’t the case with Martin as he had a long run on “Law & Order” plus got to put together his TV and stage careers on “Smash.”
Martin has been cast in what’s become another familiar role — as a police detective. His Detective Joe West in “The Flash” will be one of the main cops in Central City where the super hero works. He’s playing another detective but the job descriptions are very different. His “Law & Order” detective never had to deal with super powered villains who could control the weather. Plus, he’s playing a father in “The Flash” and that adds another level to the role.
“And the weird thing is that his children get in trouble every single week,” Martin says with a laugh.
